Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahing National Park are the two Gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda. These two parks offer 5 distinct sections where you can track gorillas at a time. Sectors include Buhoma in the southwest of Bwindi, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo all of the great Bwindi Forest. Ntebeko is the only one of Mgahinga and all these harbor 20 Habituated Gorilla families. With 160 Gorilla permits available every day Uganda Wildlife Authority will always try to see that conservation is placed as a priority. Bwindi Forest is best known for its great location with almost half of the world’s mountain Gorillas living here.
Bwindi Forest National Park is 131 square kilometers (128 Square Miles) of prehistoric, lowland forests and montane. The forests harbor endangered species within the protected boundaries of the park. Bwindi is listed as a UNESCO wildlife heritage site in Uganda. Mgahinga on the other hand is Uganda’s section of Gorilla trekking National Park in the Shadows of the Virunga Mountains. Mgahinga Covers an area of 12 Square miles of mountains with bamboo and forest area. Mgahinga has three peaks the great Virunga Mountains of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and the Sabinyo Mountains. These mountain ranges extend to DR Congo and Rwanda.
Visitors participate in various activities in Mgahinga and Bwindi National Parks. Such activities include Nature walks, Birding, Mountain Gorilla habituation and Gorilla trekking, and Community programs in the nearby villages. The Gorilla Trekking section will depend on the availability of Gorilla permits for a given section. You are always advised to consider accommodation near the trekking section. Permits are scarce during high seasons with months of June to August and then December to February. For the rest part of the year, it’s always low peak and you can choose the best Gorilla section for you.
